Authors: Ever reach the end of what you were sure was your work's final edit, only to go back to the beginning and realize you're not finished at all?
Yeah. That's where I'm at with Slate Ahn and the Books of Knowledge Part III.
But this last stage of editing is always my favorite. It's where my best dialogue comes out, it's where I find that I know a lot more words than I think I do, ones that eliminate fluff and justify the extensiveness of the English language. The gilding of the work, if you will. And also the oh-so-painful ten-page cuts, where characters that I enjoyed disappear forever. I don't kill my darlings, but I kill a lot of unnecessary fluff.
And so I make a pot of coffee and whittle away. In honor of the greatest achievement in cinema, which is out in theaters again right now (!), here's a clip from Jurassic Park. My inner child rejoices.
Tune in tomorrow for Concept Art Saturdays!
Take care and get down,
