Phew. To be finished and done with the trilogy I have been working on for so long still hasn't really sunk in. I still find myself wondering about the story's plot and structure when I'm out walking or in the shower, but then I have to remind myself that I have let go. That the story is done. And, thankfully, that I'm on to another.
I have already begun the next trilogy that takes place in the world of Alm, I'm some forty pages or so into it. The story will focus around a mysterious place known as the Undiscovered Lands, a continent to the north-west of Proterse. This story takes place some 100 years after the events of Slate Ahn and the Books of Knowledge, which readers familiar with that series know would be a much changed place. Due to the technological level at which the new story takes place, it will probably read more like a science fiction than a fantasy, though I'd call it science fantasy. Just as the first series told a fantastical tale without magic, the technology in the second series will be mostly things within the grasps of real-world science. It is the places and characters that I feel place my work in the real of fantasy, and both will be given their requisite attention alongside dirigibles and information projection systems.
I am expanding beyond the one-character narrative perspective as well, which is nice. No longer do I have to present my information through the eyes of a single character, which meant that the reader could only know as much as that character did. Now that I have more than one character's inner world to work with, I can play with concepts of perspective and relativity that I couldn't in the Slate Ahn series. The main characters for the story are as follows:
The Dahl family: mother Marion, a biologist working for a state-run laboratory in Fjird
father Efton, a laborer working at a neery mining operation in Fjird
daughter Elliah, the only unaltered child on the continent
Colis Read: An admiral from Opal Pools who has never seen war, a member of the unaltered Protersian Elite, working for a power management firm
Nolan Bhakoel: An infantryman from the Virvi Archipelago, the first of his family to leave the islands, recently enlisted
The story will follow a colonization effort in the Undiscovered Lands. But of course it wouldn't be Alm without mystery, ancient secrets, and adventures. I've got quite a few ideas brimming for this story, and I can't wait to get them out there for folks to read.
As a reminder, my first trilogy, Slate Ahn and the Books of Knowledge, is now available for Kindle and in paperback. The kindle versions are only $.99 each, so that's over 1000 pages of epic fantasy for under $3! The story of Alm starts small with Slate, but there's enough intrigue and fun in there to get the ball rolling. Special bonus- BOOK I IS FREE FOR KINDLE FROM MARCH 15-17, 2013. Pick it up and give it a scan, I promise you'll get hooked!
